ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College baseball team fell to 10-5 overall and 0-3 in the CCIW after dropping a 15-4 decision to Carthage College at Butterfield Park.
Carthage (11-3, 3-0 CCIW) jumped on the scored board in the first inning on John Hasser's two-run homer. Elmhurst responded with three runs in the bottom of the first.
Dan Matkovic tied the score with a two-run homer, and
Tyler Wargo's two-out RBI single put Elmhurst on top 3-2.
Carthage answered back with two runs in the third and five runs in the third to take a commanding 9-3 lead. The Red Men scored two runs in the fourth inning to open up an eight-run cushion.
After allowing Elmhurst three runs in the first inning, Red Men pitcher Eric Rohe settled in, retiring 13 straight batters from the first through the fifth inning. Elmhurst added a tun in the sixth inning on
Dave Wolak's run-scoring single.
The Red Men sealed the victory in the eighth inning when Mike Petti blasted a grand slam to give Carthage the 11-run victory.
Wolak,
Zach Hofer, and
Dan Bosco each recorded two hits apiece in Elmhurst's loss.
Rohe earned the victory for Carthage, finishing seven innings and scattering eight hits and four runs. he walked one and struck out seven.
Brian Marquis took the loss for Elmhurst, surrendering 11 hits and nine earned runs in 3.2 innings of work. He walked three and fanned two.
Elmhurst will look to end its three-game skid when they travel to North Park University on Tuesday, April 5.
