Baseball Team Drops Doubleheader at Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. -
The Elmhurst College baseball team dropped both ends of its CCIW-opening doubleheader at Carthage College. The Bluejays fell 10-2 in game one before dropping game two 16-11. 

CARTHAGE 10, ELMHURST 2 - Carthage (ranked 21st in the latest D3baseball.com poll) jumped out to a 6-0 lead and cruised to the 10-2 victory in the opening game of the doubleheader.

The Red Men banged out 11 hits and drew six walks in the contest.

Elmhurst scored its only two runs in the sixth inning. Dave Wolak drove in a run on a sacrifice fly and Jake Bronkema collected an RBI single to account for Elmhurst's two runs. Wolak accounted for two of Elmhurst's six hits in the loss.

Carthage's Mario Perez earned the win, working six innings and allowing just two unearned runs and five hits. He didn't issue a walk and fanned seven. Joe Luft took the loss for Elmhurst, surrendering 10 hits and seven runs in 5.1 innings of work. He walked three and fanned one.

CARTHAGE 16, ELMHURST 11 -
Carthage earned the doubleheader sweep by toppling the Bluejays 16-11. The two team combined for 33 hits in the slugfest. 

Elmhurst grabbed a 3-0 lead by scoring three runs in the second inning. Carthage answered back with a run in the second and four in the third to take a 5-3. 

Elmhurst reclaimed the lead in the fourth by scoring three runs on RBIs from Joe Kennedy, Zach Hofer and Dan Matkovic. Carthage responded with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 9-6 lead. Elmhurst plated three runs in the top of the fifth to knot the score at nine. Carthage answered back with three runs in the bottom of the bottom of the fifth to grab a 12-9 advantage. Both teams scored runs in the sixth and seventh innings, and Cathage pulled away with two runs in the bottom of the eighth. 

Kennedy led Elmhurst by finishing 4-of-6 at the plate. He scored two runs and drove in a team-leading three runs in the loss. Hofer added three hits and drove in a pair for the Bluejays while Wolak, Tyler Wargo, and Brian Evans collected two hits apiece.

Dave Parr took the loss for Elmhurst, surrendering 15 hits and 11 earned runs on 4.2 innings off work.

Elmhurst (10-4 overall, 0-2 CCIW) hosts Carthage on Sunday, April 3.
