ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College baseball team slipped to 11-12 overall after dropping both ends of a doubleheader to North Central College. The Bluejays dropped game one 15-1 and their six-run rally in the bottom of the ninth camp up shor in an 11-10 loss in the night cap.
NORTH CENTRAL 15, ELMHURST 1 - North Central (13-7, 7-3) scored in every inning except the third en rout to the 14-run victory.the Cardinals banged out 12 hits in the victory. The Cardinals also took advantage of the Bluejay pitching staff's control issues. Elmhurst pitchers walked 11 batters and hit three more.
Elmhurst finished with only one run and six hits.
Dan Matkovic doubled home Elmhurst's only run of the game in the sixth inning.
Brian Evans collected two of Elmhurst's six hits and scored the Bluejays' only run of the game.
Joe Luft took the loss for Elmhurst, slipping to 1-3 in the process. Luft surrendered eight hits and nine runs in 5.1 innings of work. He walked six and fanned three in the loss.
Jon Rashid pitched a complete game to earn the victory for the Cardinals. Rashid scattered six hits and one earned run in seven innings. He walked one and struck out seven.
NORTH CENTRAL 11, ELMHURST 10 - Elmhurst jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the second inning, but North Central outscored the Bluejays 11-1 over the next six innings to build a seven-run lead. The Bluejays rallied for six runs in the ninth, but stranded the tying run at third.
Joe Ramirez put Elmhurst on the scoreboard in the second inning when he belted a two-run double.
Joe Kennedy added an RBI groundout to give the Bluejays a 3-0 lead.
North Central scored a run in the second, but the Bluejays responded with a run on a Zac Hofer RBI single in the fourth.
The Cardinals took advantage of an Elmhurst error in the fifth to score four runs and take a 5-4 lead. North Central added a run in the sixth, two in the seventh, and two in the eighth to open up a 10-4 lead. North Central added a run in the ninth to open up an 11-4. advantage.
Elmhurst mounted a six-run rally in the bottom of the ninth. After Elmhurst loaded the bases with no outs,
Joe Kennedy and Hofer drew back-to-back walks to force in a pair of runs. After a flyout,
Dan Bosco drew a walk to force in another run and bring the tying run to the plate. A North Central error allowed a run to score and kept the bases loaded for the Bluejays.
Tyler Wargo drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to pull Elmhurst to within two runs. A Ramirez double pulled Elmhurst to wihtin a run and brought the winning run to second, but
Eric Stevenson struck out to end the game
Brian Marquis took the loss for Elmhurst. Marquis allowed 11 hits and five earned runs in six innings of work. He walked three and struck out two.
Elmhurst travels to North Central on Monday, April 18, to complete the three-game series with the Cardinals.
