ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College baseball team fell to 11-10 overall after dropping a 9-4 contest to North Park University at Butterfield Park.
Elmhurst and North Park each totaled 11 hits, but the Bluejay pitchers hit seven batters and issued three walks to put 10 Vikings on base. The Vikings left 13 runners on base while the Bluejays stranded eight.
North Park got on the scoreboard in the first after an RBI groundout and a run-scoring single plated a pair of runners who reached base by getting hit by pitches. Elmhurst cut the lead in half in the third inning when
Dan Matkovic drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.
The Vikings scored a pair of runs in the second on a groundout and a sacrifice fly to take a 4-1 lead. Elmhurst responded with a three-run fifth inning to knot the score at four.
Zach Hofer singled home a run and
Tyler Wargo added a two-run single for the Bluejays.
North Park jumped back in front with a pair of runs in the eighth inning. A sacrifice fly from Mike Domenick and a run-scoring single from Andy Athans gave the Vikings a 6-4 advantage. The Vikings sealed the win in the ninth inning by tacking on three insurance runs. Domenick delivered a two-run single for the Vikings in the frame.
Brian Evans and
Joe Kennedy recorded three hits apiece to lead Elmhurst's offense in the loss. Evans scored a pair of runs for the Bluejays. Hofer and Wargo collected two hits each for the Bluejays.
Joe Ramirez took the loss in relief for the Bluejays. Scott worked 3.1 innings and allowed four hits and two earned runs. He walked one, struck out one, and hit three batters.
Elmhurst hosts North Central College in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 16.
