CHANDLER, Ariz. - The Elmhurst College baseball team moved to 8-2 on the season after splitting a pair of games a the RussMatt Tournament in Arizona. The Bluejays dropped a 12-5 decision to Benedictine University-Springfield, but bounced back to hammer Thomas College 19-10.
BENEDICTINE-SPRINGFIELD 12, ELMHURST 5 - Benedictine-Springfield (5-10) avenged a one-run loss to Elmhurst earlier in the week by toppling the Bluejays 12-5.
Dave Wolak and
Alex Molek totaled three hits apiece to lead the Bluejays' offense in the loss. Molek drove home two runs while Wolak added an RBI.
Dan Matkovic finished 2-for-3 at the plate and also drove in two runs.
Zach Hofer recorded a pair of hits and scored twice in the loss.
Ricky Palandri (0-1) took the loss from the mound. Palandri worked 3.2 innings and surrendered five hits and six earned runs. He walked three and struck out one.
ELMHURST 19, THOMAS 10 - Elmhurst's bats sizzled in a 19-10 victory over Thomas. The Bluejays totaled 19 hits and drew 13 walks in the nine-run victory.
Tyler Wargo and
Dan Bosco sparked the offense by driving in four runs apiece. Wargo finished a homer shy of the cycle, recording a double and a triple while also walking three times. Wolak banged out two hits and drove in two in the victory while
Eric Stevenson finished 3-for-7 at the plate with an RBI. Hofer, Matkovic,
Brian Evans, and
Tyler Facker all recorded two hits in the victory. Evans, Hofer, and Facker also drove in a run apiece for the Bluejays.
Alex Van Cleve (1-0) notched his first victory in an Elmhurst uniform. Van Cleve worked five innings and scattered three hits and five walks while allowing just two earned runs. He struck out two in the victory. Hofer pitched 1.2 scoreless innings of relief and fanned two.
Elmhurst closes out play at the RussMatt Tournament by facing Williams College on March 25.
