Baseball Team Opens With Sweep of Capital

XENIA, Ohio - The Elmhurst College baseball team kicked off the 2011 season by sweeping  a doubleheader from Capital University at the Athletes in Action Stadium in Xenia, Ohio.

Elmhurst (2-0) scored a 13-7 victory in game one and finished the sweep with a 7-4 win in game two.

ELMHURST 13, CAPITAL 7 (Game One) -
Elmhurst's bats were red hot in the season-opening win over Capital. The Bluejays banged out 17 hits, including eight doubles in the win. Jake Bronkema finished with three hits, including a double and triple, and also scored three runs in his Elmhurst debut. Brian Evans added three hits and drove in pair of runs. Eric Stevenson, Zach Hofer, Tyler Wargo, and Joe Ramirez all added two hits apiece in the win. Wargo and Dave Wolak also drove in two runs each in the Bluejays' victory.

Joe Luft picked up the win for Elmhurst from the mound. The junior worked 5.1 innings and allowed seven runs and four hits. He walked three while fanning eight batters.

ELMHURST 7, CAPITAL 4 (Game Two) - The Bluejays finished the doubleheader sweep of the Crusaders with a 7-4 win in game two. Dan Matkovic sparked the offense by smashing a two-run homer. Wolak also collected two hits and drove in a pair in Elmhurst's win.

Freshman Dave Parr picked up the win from the mound, tossing six innings and scattering nine hits and four runs. He walked one and struck out three. Freshman Anthony Jerkovich worked three scoreless innings of relief to record the save. He allowed just one hit while striking out two.

Elmhurst will face Ohio Northern University in a doubleheader on Sunday, March 13.
