ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College men's basketball team rallied from a 13-point second half deficit to knot the score, but fell to Illinois Wesleyan 72-68 on Friday night.
Elmhurst closed to within a point late in the first half at 27-26 when
Zack Boyd drilled a three, but Illinois Wesleyan opened a 9-0 run to go up 10 before Boyd hit another trey to account for the halftime margin of 36-29 as Elmhurst shot just 29 percent.
The visiting Titans opened a 13-point advantage, their largest of the game, at 46-33 with 14:22 to play as Travis Rosenkranz dropped in a layup. Elmhurst clawed within five inside eight minutes before the guests again stretched the lead to double figures.
Sean Fendley, returning to the lineup for the first time in CCIW play, capped an 8-0 Elmhurst run when he hit a three and was fouled in the process to even the score at 62 with 2:11 remaining. The tie was the first of the contest. Illinois Wesleyan responded with four straight points and hit six free throws in the closing minutes to close the door.
Illinois Wesleyan (15-5, 6-3) saw four players reach double figures led by Jordan Zimmer's 14. Doug Sexauer kicked in 13, Travis Rosenkranz 12, and Sean Johnson 10. The Titans shot 63 percent in the second half and finished the game at 57.4 percent.
Zack Boyd led all scorers with 18 points for Elmhurst.
Sean Fendley posted 13 off the bench in his return to the lineup, while
Erik Dornfeld totaled 11. Elmhurst reeled in 16 offensive rebounds and tallied 20 second chance points. The Bluejays shot 37.3 percent for the game.
Elmhurst (7-13, 2-7) will play at Carthage on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.
