Bluejays Fall in Closing Seconds to Carleton

ELMHURST, Ill. -
The Elmhurst College men's basketball team dropped to 1-2 on the season after falling 69-67 in the closing seconds to Carleton College.

With the score tied at 67-67, Carleton's Caleb Rosenow hit a running jumper in the paint with 2.3 seconds remaining to put the Knights on top. Elmhurst's Zack Boyd had a good look at a three-pointer at the buzzer, but the shot bounced off the rim and out, giving Carleton (1-1) the win.

Elmhurst (1-2) controlled the opening half, leading by as many as 11 points and carrying a 38-30 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Carleton started the second half on a 12-4 run to knot the score at 42-42 just five minutes into the half. The Bluejays' built a lead back to four points, but Carleton responded with an 11-2 run to open up a 53-48 lead. A three-pointer from James Robertson and a lay-up by Jerome Robinson pulled the Bluejays even at 53 with 6:49 left on the clock. The two teams traded lead for the next three minutes with Elmhurst opening up a 61-58 advantage after a three-point play from Robinson.

A three-point play from Carleton's Taylor Hanson knotted the score at 63-63 with 2:35 remaining. The Knights went on top 65-63 after a Rosenow lay-up with 1:41 left. A pair of free throws from Boyd tied the game for the 10th time with 1:23 left, but Hanson hit a lay-up with 1:03 remaining to give Carleton a 67-65 advantage. Nick Sanford evened the score with 48 seconds left after he collected an offensive rebound and hit a put-back lay-up. After a turnover by Carleton, the Bluejays had chance to take the lead with 37 seconds left, but Elmhurst missed a pair of free throws setting the stage for Rosenow's game-winning jumper.

Elmhurst finished the contest shoot 45.8 percent (27-of-59) from the floor, including 38.5 percent (5-of-13) from downtown. Carleton shot 52.0 percent (26-of-50) from the floor, including 45.5 percent (5-of-11) from beyond the arc. The Knights finished with a slim 33-29 edge in rebounding.

Robinson led the Bluejays in the loss, scoring 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting. Robertson added 14 points and five assists while Boyd totaled 10 points for Elmhurst. Mike McCurdy added nine points while Sanford scored seven for the Bluejays.

Tom Sawatzke scored a game-high 22 points to lead Carleton in the win. Hanson finished with 13 points and eight rebounds while Danny Geiger totaled 12 points and seven assists. Rosenow finished with 10 points and six boards.

Elmhurst travels to the DePauw University Tournament on November 26-27.
