ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College baseball team upped its record to 9-30 overall and 4-17 in CCIW play after splitting a doubleheader with Wheaton College at Butterfield Park.
Elmhurst hung on for a 12-10 victory in game one, but Wheaton toppled the Bluejays 10-8 in game two to earn the doubleheader split.
ELMHURST 12, WHEATON 10 - Elmhurst fought off a ninth-inning rally from Wheaton to topple the Thunder 12-10 in the first game of a doubleheader.
The Bluejays jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead after just one inning. RBI singles from
Nick Herrera and
Dan Matkovic helped put the Bluejays out in front. Elmhurst built a 6-1 advantage after four innings, but the Thunder scored five times in the top of the fifth to knot the score at six.
Elmhurst reclaimed the lead in the sixth inning by scoring three times. A bases loaded walk to
Joey Natale forced in a run.
Ryan Schrader followed with a two-run single to give Elmhurst a 9-6 advantage.
A bases loaded seventh-inning walk to
Mike Kerr followed by a balk gave the Bluejays an 11-6 lead. The Bluejays tacked on an unearned run in the eighth to open up a six-run cushion.
Wheaton rallied back for four runs in the bottom of the ninth and the Thunder brought the tying run to the plate, but
Joe Ramirez recorded the final two outs to notch a save for the Bluejays.
Herrera led Elmhurst at the plate, finishing 4-for-5 with three runs scored and one driven in. Schrader collected three hits and drove in two while Matkovic totaled two hits, three runs scored, and two RBI.
Joe Kennedy added a pair of hits and scored three times for the Bluejays.
Cody Boals improved to 4-3 on the season by recording the win for Elmhurst. Boals worked 8.1 innings and allowed 12 hits and 10 runs. He walked seven and fanned 10. Ramirez retired two of the three batters he faced to record the save.
WHEATON 10, ELMHURST 8 (Game Two) - Wheaton earned the doubleheader split by toppling Elmhurst 10-8.
Wheaton jumped on top with three runs in the third inning. Justin Zeller sparked the inning with a two-run homer to right field.
Elmhurst cut into Wheaton's lead and threatened on several occasions, but the Bluejays were unable to come through with a clutch hit. Elmhurst put the lead two runners on base with no outs in three straight innings, but managed just two runs over the three-inning span.
Wheaton scored four runs in the eighth to turn a two-run lead into a six-run cushion, but the Bluejays answered right back with four runs in the bottom of the eight.
Matkovic collected three hits to lead the Bluejays while Schrader recorded two hits.
Mike Kerr and Herrera each drove in a pair for the Bluejays.
Brian Marquis took the loss for the Bluejays. Marquis (1-2) worked five innings and allowed eight hits and six runs.
