SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - The Elmhurst College baseball team dropped its third straight contest, falling to Wheaton College 10-7 at Alexian Field in Schaumburg.
Wheaton (23-15, 9-10 CCIW) jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one inning, using a three-run homer to jump in front of the Bluejays.
Elmhurst (8-29, 3-16 CCIW) sliced the lead down to just one after a two-run homer from
Tim Nolan in the second inning and a run scoring on a
Mike Kerr grounder in the third.
Wheaton increased its lead to 5-3 with a run in the bottom of the fourth. An RBI single by
Dan Matkovic in the fifth pulled Elmhurst to within a run, but the Thunder pushed home another run in the bottom of the inning to build a 6-4 cushion.
A triple from
Ryan Schrader led to an Elmhurst run in the sixth and the Bluejays tied the game at six in the seventh on a
Marc Shield sacrifice fly.
Wheaton came right back and plated a run in the bottom of the seventh to reclaim the lead.
Zach Hofer evened the score at seven in the top of the eighth with an RBI ground out.
Wheaton started the bottom of the eighth with back-to-back walks and Brian Kolb put the Thunder on top for good with an RBI double.
Hofer recorded three of Elmhurst's 11 hits in the loss. Kennedy, Matkovic, and
Nick Herrera each recorded two hits for the Bluejays.
Joe Luft took the loss for Elmhurst, dropping to 2-5 overall. Luft was tagged for 10 hits and nine runs over seven innings of work. He walked five and fanned nine.
Elmhurst and Wheaton wrap-up the three game series with a doubleheader at Butterfield Park on Saturday, May 8.
