Bluejay Baseball Team Falls at North Park

The Elmhurst College baseball team dropped to 3-12 overall and 0-4 in the CCIW after falling 6-4 at North Park University.

Elmhurst jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the second inning. Dan Matkovic smashed a run-scoring triple and then scored on Mike Kerr's RBI single.

North Park (13-7, 2-2 CCIW) evened the score at two by plating a pair of runs in the fifth. The Vikings surged ahead in the seventh inning when Devin Melecio launched a two-run homer. 

The Bluejays battled back to tie the score at four with a pair of runs in the eighth inning. Vince Mathe and Zach Crinigan recorded back-to-back run-scoring singles with two outs to pull the Bluejays even.

Elmhurst's lead was short lived as North Park took advantage of a pair of walks to reclaim the lead in the bottom of the eighth. With two outs and two runners on via base on balls, the Vikings used back-to-back hits to take a 6-4 advantage.

Elmhurst threatened in the ninth, putting the tying runs on base with no outs, but the Bluejays stranded both runners to end the game.

Marc Shield, Nick Herrera, Matkovic, and Mathe all recorded two hits apiece in the loss.

Cody Boals made the start and took a no-decision for the Bluejays. Boals allowed nine hits and four runs over 6.2 innings of work. He walked seven while striking out seven. Dan Napientek took the loss in relief, surrendering two runs in 1.1 innings.

Elmhurst will attempt to snap its six-game skid when they travel to Rockford College on Friday, April 9.
