Bluejay Baseball Team Splits Two At Millikin

DECATUR, Ill. - The Elmhurst College baseball team upped its record to 7-22 overall and 3-12 in the CCIW after splitting a doubleheader against Millikin University at Sunnyside Park in Decatur.

Elmhurst scored an 11-8 extra-inning victory in game one, which was resumed in the bottom of the first after getting halted by rain on Saturday. Millikin (9-22, 4-11 CCIW) rebounded from the game one loss by scoring a 6-5 walk-off victory in game two.

ELMHURST 11, MILLIKIN 8 (Game One) - Elmhurst scored three runs in the top of the 10th to score an 11-8 victory over the Big Blue. 

After falling behind 4-2 early, the Bluejays scored a pair of runs in the fifth, and two more in the sixth to build a 6-4 lead. The Bluejays carried an 8-6 lead into the bottom of the ninth, but Millikin's Blaise Sylvester smashed a two-run homer to send the game into extra innings.

Elmhurst recaptured the lead in the 10th on an RBI double from Joe Kennedy and two-run single from Joey Natale

Kennedy finished 3-for-6 at the plate with two runs scored and four RBI. Vince Mathe drove in three for the Bluejays. Mike Kerr recorded a pair of hits, including a solo homer in the ninth inning.

Joe Luft improved to 2-3 on the season by notching the win in relief. Luft worked three innings and allowed three hits and two runs. He walked two and fanned four.

MILLIKIN 6, ELMHURST 5 (Game Two) - Elmhurst led 5-4 heading to the bottom of the ninth, but Sylvester hit a two-out, two-run walk-off home run to propel the Big Blue to a 6-5 come-from-behind victory.

The Bluejays scored three runs in the first to take a 3-0 lead. After Millikin scored three straight runs to knot the score, Elmhurst reclaimed the lead when Natale belted a two-run homer in the seventh to put Elmhurst on top 5-3. The Big Blue got a run back in the bottom of the eighth to set the stage for Sylvester's game-winning home run.

Kennedy collected three more hits to pace the Elmhurst offense in the loss. 

Dan Napientek took the loss in relief for Elmhurst, allowing two hits and three runs (two earned) in 3.2 innings of work.
