MOLINE, Ill. - The Elmhurst College baseball team salvaged the final game of a three-game series with Augustana College by toppling the Vikings 12-8 in Moline.
Elmhurst jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after scoring a pair of runs in the first, and a run in the third. Dan Bosco doubled home two runs in the first and Dan Matkovic drove in a run in the third on a sacrifice fly.
Elmhurst's lead was short-lived as Augustana plated three runs in the bottom of the third to notch the score at three.
The Bluejays responded with a four-run top of the fourth.
Tim Nolan blasted a two-run homer to start the scoring and
Nick Herrera and Matkovic each added run-scoring singles.
Elmhurst tacked on three runs in the fifth to take a 10-4 lead.
Jake Zunkel,
Joe Kennedy, and Herrera all drove in runs in the Bluejays' three-run fifth.
Augustana scored runs in the sixth and seventh to pull to within four, but the Bluejays tacked on two runs in the eighth behind RBIs from Kennedy and
Zach Hofer.
Matkovic finished 3-for-5 at the plate with a run scored and two RBI to pace the Bluejays. Kennedy, Herrera, Bosco, and Zunkel drove in two runs apiece in the Bluejays' victory.
Cody Boals earned the win from the mound, tossing six innings and allowing eight hits and six runs (five earned). He walked three and struck out two.
