ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College baseball team slipped to 4-19 overall and 1-9 in CCIW play after dropping both ends of a doubleheader to Augustana College.
Augustana (18-8, 5-6 CCIW) took game one 10-7 and the Vikings finished the sweep by scoring a 10-5 victory in game two.
AUGUSTANA 10, ELMHURST 7 (Game One) - Augustana used a pair of late inning home runs to break a 4-4 tie and pull away for the 10-7 victory.
Elmhurst scored a pair of runs in the first inning on a
Nick Herrera two-run double. The Vikings tied the score at two with a run in the second and run in the fourth. The Bluejays recaptured a two-run cushion in the bottom of the fourth when Vince
Vince Mathe roped a two-run single to give Elmhurst a 4-2 lead
The Vikings scored two in the fifth to tie score and Dave Hoffman gave Augustana its first lead of the game with a two-run homer in the sixth. Jared McIntosh added a solo shot in the seventh to put the Vikings up 7-4.
The Vikings added a pair of runs in the top of the ninth to take a 10-5 lead. Elmhurst rallied back for a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to pull to within three, but the Bluejays grounded into their fourth double play of the game to end the contest.
Mathe and
Dan Matkovic finished with two hits apiece to lead the Bluejays' offense in the loss.
Joe Luft took the loss and dropped to 1-3 for the Bluejays. Luft allowed nine hits and eight runs (seven earned) in 6.1 innings of work. He walked five while fanning six.
AUGUSTANA 10, ELMHURST 5 (Game Two) - Augustana completed the doubleheader sweep by toppling Elmhurst 10-5.
The Vikings jumped out to a 4-0 lead after just two innings. Augustana scored three times in the first, and tacked on a run in the second to open up the four run cushion.
The Bluejays' sliced the lead down to just a run after
Joe Kennedy singled home a run in the third and Herrera followed with a two-run double.
Augustana answered back by scoring three straight runs to open up a 7-3 advantage. The Bluejays rallied in the seventh, scoring a run and loading the bases with no outs, chasing Augustana starter Josiah Martin in the process. The Vikings Mike Trotta limited Elmhurst to just one more run in the inning and kept the Vikings on top 7-5 after seven innings. Augustana tacked on three insurance runs in the ninth to score the 10-5 win.
Mathe,
Tim Nolan, and
Jake Zunkel all recorded two hits to pace the Elmhurst offense.
Alex Bruneau took the loss for the Bluejays, dropping to 1-1 on the season. Bruneau allowed nine hits and seven runs (four earned) in seven innings. He walked two and fanned three.
Elmhurst finishes the home-and-home series with the Vikings by traveling to Augustana on Sunday, April 18.
