ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College baseball team upped its record to 4-17 overall after splitting a doubleheader with North Park University.
Elmhurst snapped a 10-game losing streak by pounding North Park (17-9, 6-3 CCIW) 15-5 in game one. North Park bounced back from the defeat by scoring an 11-7 victory in game number two.
ELMHURST 15, NORTH PARK 5 (Game One) - The Bluejays scored their first CCIW victory of the season by battering North Park 15-5.
Elmhurst (1-8 in the CCIW) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead only to have North Park score four straight runs to knot the score.
The tie was short lived as
Keaten Landis smashed a solo homer to left field in the bottom of the sixth to put Elmhurst back on top. The Bluejays used an RBI ground out from
Dan Matkovic followed by a sacrifice fly from
Mike Kerr, and a run-scoring double from
Dan Bosco to take an 8-4 lead after eight innings.
The Bluejays put the game away in the eighth inning by scoring seven times to win by the 10-run mercy rule.
Nick Herrera drove in a pair in the eighth with a single, while Kerr smashed a three-run homer.
Ryan Schrader added a two-run double to end the game for Elmhurst.
Kerr finished with four runs driven in for Elmhurst. Schrader finished 3-for-5 with three doubles. Herrera and Landis drove in two runs apiece for the Bluejays.
Cody Boals improved to 2-1 while scoring the win for Elmhurst. Boals worked seven innings and allowed just four runs and seven hits. He walked two while striking out seven.
NORTH PARK 11, ELMHURST 7 (Game Two) - North Park erased an early three-run deficit to defeat Elmhurst 11-7 in game number two.
Trailing 3-1 in the third inning, the Bluejays pushed home five runs to take a 6-3 lead. Bosco started the scoring with an RBI single.
Vince Mathe added a two-run single, while Schrader drew a bases loaded walk to force in a run.
Joe Kennedy added a sacrifice fly to plate the Bluejays' final run of the inning.
North Park chipped away at the lead by scoring twice in the fourth. Matkovic gave Elmhurst a 7-5 cushion in the fourth by blasting a solo homer.
The Vikings answered back with three runs in the fifth inning to grab an 8-7 lead. North Park tacked on three insurance runs in the eighth to secure the 11-7 victory.
Bosco, Mathe, Matkovic, and Schrader banged out two hits apiece in the loss.
Dan Napientek dropped to 0-5 on the season after taking the loss. He allowed eight hits and eight runs (six earned) in five innings of work. He walked three while fanning two.
Elmhurst hosts Augustana College on Saturday, April 17.
