Elmhurst Baseball Team Drops Pair at North Central

NAPERVILLE, Ill. -
The Elmhurst College baseball team slipped to 3-15 overall and 0-6 in CCIW competition following a pair of losses at North Central College.

North Central (17-3, 6-1 CCIW) swept the doubleheader, taking game one 16-3, and scoring a 22-12 victory in game two.

NORTH CENTRAL 16, ELMHURST 3 (Game One) - North Central battered Elmhurst pitchers for 14 runs in the opening three innings en route to the 16-3 victory.

The Cardinals scored six runs in the first, a run in the second, and seven runs in the third to blow the game open. 

Joe Turek slugged a pair of home runs, and drove in five runs to pace the Cardinals. Michael Corrigan also homered and drove in five runs for North Central.

Elmhurst scored all three of its runs in the fourth inning. Dan Matkovic homered to start Elmhurst's scoring while Vince Mathe roped a two-run triple for the Bluejays.

Joe Luft (1-2) took the loss for the Bluejays, surrendering four hits, and six earned runs in two innings of work. He walked five and struck out one. 

NORTH CENTRAL 22, ELMHURST 12 (Game Two) - North Central finished the doubleheader sweep with a 22-12 victory in game two. 

Elmhurst erased an early 10-4 deficit, but the Bluejays could not silence the Cardinals' bats. North Central banged out 19 hits while scoring the 22-12 win.

The Bluejays jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, but the Cardinals exploded in the bottom half of the frame, sending 14 batters to the plate and scoring 10 runs. 

Elmhurst chipped away at North Central's lead with three runs in the second, three in the fourth, and two in the fifth to take a 12-11 lead. North Central sent 13 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fifth while scoring nine runs to pull away from the Bluejays.

Nick Herrera led Elmhurst's offense by finishing 3-for-4 at the plate. Herrera drove in five runs and slugged a three-run blast in the second inning. Zach Hofer added a pair of hits and drove in three while Joe Kennedy drove in a a pair. Marc Shield finished 2-for-2 and scored three runs.

Dan Napientek took the loss in relief, surrendering seven hits and four runs in four innings. Elmhurst pitchers struggled to find the plate, combining for 11 walks in seven innings. 

Elmhurst hosts North Central on Sunday, April 11.
