BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Elmhurst College Men's Basketball team made a fierce rally at Illinois Wesleyan University on Saturday night, but couldn't overcome an early deficit in falling 73-59.

Illinois Wesleyan roared out of the gates on its home floor. It took just over seven minutes for the Titans to open a 14-point advantage at 20-6 capping a 9-0 run with a Ryan Connolly layup. Elmhurst found themselves down by 24 at the half, 46-22, after the hosts shot 62.5% from the field.

The Bluejays went on an early run in the second half, whittling the lead down to 16 with an 8-2 run. Dustin Bainter finished the run with a jumper at 16:01, pulling Elmhurst with 48-32. Illinois Wesleyan immediately answered, stretching the lead back to 23 points at 61-38 just past the midway point of the half.

The Bluejays embarked on a 15-0 run spanning over four minutes that started when Zack Boyd hit a pair of free throws. Chris Childs pulled Elmhurst within 61-53 on a jumper with 5:51 to go. The Titans put the game away by answering with an 8-0 run. 

Elmhurst shot 60% in the second half but finished the game shooting 49% (25-51). The Bluejays also struggled on the glass as Illinois Wesleyan held a commanding 41-20 edge on the glass including 19 offensive rebounds that helped lead to 24 second chance points.

Zack Boyd led all scorers with 16 points. He was the lone Elmhurst player to hit double digits. Aaron Schroeder and Mike Jackson pitched in eight points each. Illinois Wesleyan (17-4, 8-2), who pulled into a first place tie with Carthage, placed three players in double figured led by Duncan Lawson's 12 off the bench. All of his points came on first-half three-pointers.

Elmhurst (6-15, 1-9) returns home on Wednesday night for a contest with the CCIW co-leader Carthage College. Tip-off at R.A. Faganel Hall is slated for 7:30 p.m.
