ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College men's basketball team closed out the 2009-10 season with an 82-61 loss to Wheaton College. The Bluejays finished the season 6-19 overall and 1-13 in the CCIW.
Wheaton (18-7, 10-4 CCIW) built a 12-point (24-12) advantage midway through the first half, but the Bluejays mounted a 19-8 run to take a 33-32 lead with less than a minute to play on a
Chris Childs 3-point play. Wheaton's Ben Panner knocked down a jumper to give the Thunder a 34-33 lead with 38 seconds to go, and Tim McCrary added a pair of free throws to give Wheaton a 36-33 halftime lead.
The Thunder pulled away in the second half, opening play with an 11-0 run to build a 47-33 lead. The Bluejays came no closer than 10 points for the remainder of the game as the Thunder built a 23-point lead and cruised to the 82-61 victory.
Elmhurst shot 40.0 percent (22-of-55) from the floor. After shooting 59.1 percent (13-of-22) in the first half, the Bluejays struggled in the second, hitting just 27.3 percent (9-of-33) of its shots. The Thunder finished the contest shooting 54.3 percent (25-of-46) from the field. While Elmhurst struggled in the second half, Wheaton surged ahead by shooting 60.9 percent (14-of-23) from the floor.
Zack Boyd led Elmhurst in the loss with a double-double. Boyd totaled 22 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Aaron Schroeder and
Mike McCurdy added eight points apiece while
Mike Jackson scored seven. Childs totaled six points and six assists while
Dustin Bainter scored six for Elmhurst.
Elmhurst had no answer for Panner. The Thunder guard poured in a career-high 34 points on 12-of-20 shooting. Panner knocked down 8-of-12 from beyond the arc. McCrary totaled 18 points, eight assists, and six rebounds while Andrew Jahns scored nine.
