NAPERVILLE, Ill. - The Elmhurst College men's basketball team dropped to 6-18 overall and 1-12 in the CCIW following an 88-78 loss to North Central College.
North Central (12-12, 5-8 CCIW) led from the opening tip, as the Cardinals opened up a quick lead and used a 17-6 run to open up a 31-17 lead with seven minutes left in the first half. North Central led 42-29 at halftime.
Elmhurst pulled to within six points (54-48) with 11 minutes left in the contest, but the Cardinals responded with a 10-2 run over the next two minutes to open up a 64-50 advantage. The Bluejays cut the Cardinals' lead back to down to nine, but came no closer as the Cardinals scored the 88-78 win.
Elmhurst shot 51.9 percent (28-of-54) from the floor, but the Bluejays struggled from downtown, hitting only 25.0 percent (3-of-12) of its 3-point attempts. The Bluejays went 0-for-5 from beyond the arc in the second half.
North Central finished the contest shooting a whopping 60.4 percent (32-of-53) from the floor, including 66.7 percent (18-of-27) in the second half.
Chris Childs came off the bench to score a season-high 21 points to lead Elmhurst in the loss. Childs shot 5-of-8 from the floor and was a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line. Childs also added a game-high eight assists.
Mike McCurdy totaled 16 points and six rebounds for Elmhurst while
Dustin Bainter scored 14.
Aaron Schroeder added 12 points while
Zack Boyd scored eight for the Bluejays.
Brian Evans totaled a double-double to lead the Cardinals. Evans recorded a career-high 26 points to go along with 10 rebounds and five assists. David Twyman added 23 points and eight boards while Tyler Bantz came off the bench to total 11 points and five assists. Derek Raridon added 10 points for the Cardinals.
Elmhurst closes out the 2009-10 season by hosting Wheaton College on Saturday, February 20.
