Men's Hoops Team Falls to North Park in Closing Seconds

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College men's basketball team dropped to 6-17 overall following a 73-72 loss to North Park University in the closing seconds of the contest.

North Park's Davon Russell drove the length of the floor and hit a desperation running one-handed floater with 1.2 seconds left on the clock to lift the Vikings (12-11, 6-6 CCIW) to the victory.

The first half featured three ties and nine lead changes before North Park built a 10-point lead (37-27) with 1:26 to play. Elmhurst closed the half on a 4-0 run to pull to within six points (37-31) at halftime.

North Park opened the second half on an 11-4 run to push their lead up to 13 points with 17 minutes to play. Elmhurst slowly sliced into the lead, pulling to within three points with 7:15 remaining. Mike Jackson hit a put-back in the lane with 3:54 left to give Elmhurst its first lead of the half. 

North Park answered right back as Shaun Collins knocked down a 3-pointer to give the Vikings a 68-66 lead with 3:26 left. Another put-back by Jackson tied the score at 68-68 with 2:39 remaining on the clock. After a turnover by the Vikings, D'Ante Foster hit a lay-up to give Elmhurst a 70-68 lead.

Nick Williams put North Park back on top with 1:04 left after he hit a trey, giving the Vikings a 71-70 lead. Aaron Schroeder collected his own rebound on a 3-point attempt allowing the Bluejays to call a timeout with 31 seconds remaining. Dustin Bainter knocked down a free-throw line jumper with 22.7 seconds left on the clock to put the Bluejays up 72-71. After a North Park turnover with eight seconds to play, Elmhurst missed a free throw and North Park's Jorge Gonzalez grabbed the loose ball. The Vikings called timeout with 6.2 seconds left to set up Robinson's game-winning shot.

Elmhurst shot 53.6 percent (30-of-56) from the floor, including 45.5 percent (5-of-11) from downtown. North Park finished the contest hitting 51.8 percent (29-of-56) of its shots, including 33.3 percent (6-of-18) from beyond the arc. 

Bainter led Elmhurst with 15 points and six rebounds in the loss. Jackson totaled 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Zack Boyd added 13 points while Foster came off the bench to score a season-high 12 points on 5-of-5 shooting. Aaron Schroeder added eight points in the loss.

North Park was led by Gonzalez's 15 points. Shaun Collins added 12 points while Williams scored 11.
