ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College men's basketball team slipped to 6-16 overall and 1-10 in CCIW play following an 82-68 loss to Carthage College.
Carthage (17-5, 9-2 CCIW) used a strong second-half surge to score the victory. The Red Men opened up an early nine-point cushion in the first half, but the Bluejays battled back to reclaim the lead with just under six minutes to play in the half. Dustin Bainter hit a lay-up and was fouled at the buzzer. Bainter converted the three-point play to knot the score at 43-43 at halftime.
The Red Men opened the second half by scoring the first five points. Elmhurst cut the lead down to three, but came no closer for the remainder of the contest. Leading by five (52-47), Carthage used a 18-4 run over the next five minutes to open up a 19-point advantage and put the game out of reach.
Elmhurst shot 46.2 percent (24-of-52) from the floor, including 33.3 percent (4-of-12) from long range. Carthage finished the contest shooting 58.8 percent (30-of-51) from the field, including 50.0 percent (12-of-24) from beyond the arc.
Dustin Bainter led Elmhurst and all scorers with a game-high 20 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Zack Boyd added 17 points and six boards while
Aaron Schroeder finished with seven points.
Six players reached double figures for Carthage. Steve Djurickovic led the charge with 15 points and four assists. Raul Guzman added 14 points and and five assists while Cody Hilton came off the bench to score 13. Max Cary totaled 11 points while Malcom Kelly and Tyler Pierce hit for 10 points apiece.
Elmhurst hosts North Park University on Saturday, February 13.
