LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Elmhurst College men's basketball team scored a 70-66 overtime victory over the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh at the Las Vegas Hoopla Tournament.
Elmhurst (4-5) raced out to a 10-point lead in the opening half, but UW-Oshkosh (4-5) closed the half on a 15-3 run to take a 28-26 lead at halftime. The second half featured 11 lead changes and seven ties as the two teams traded buckets and leads for the majority of the half. Elmhurst led by two in the final minute, but Paul Wojahn hit a pair of free throws for the Titans to send the game into overtime.
In the extra period, the Bluejays scored the first seven points while holding the Titans to without a point for the first 3:30 of overtime. The Bluejays put the game away from the foul line, hitting 7-of-8 attempts int he final 1:30.
Elmhurst shot 43.2 percent (19-of-44) from the field, including 23.1 percent (3-of-13) from beyond the arc. Elmhurst made a living at the foul line, attempting 40 free throws in the contest and hitting 29 (72.5 percent). The Bluejays also had a 40-33 rebounding advantage.
Zack Boyd pumped in 17 points and grabbed a team-leading eight rebounds in the win.
Sean Fendley came off the bench to score 14 points and grab five boards for the Bluejays.
Mike McCurdy chipped in with 12 points while
Nick Sanford added nine points, six rebounds, and three blocks for the Bluejays.
UW-Oshkosh shot 37.1 percent (23-of-62) from the field, including 34.4 percent (11-of-32) from three-point range.
Greg Schrimpf led the Titans with a game-high 21 points. T.J. Kellner added 15 points while John Flanigan scored 12 and grabbed seven rebounds. Brian Washington recorded a team-leading eight rebounds for the Titans.
Elmhurst hosts Calvin College at the Bluejay Classic Tournament on December 29.
