ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College men's basketball team dropped to 5-8 overall and 0-2 in conference play after dropping its CCIW home opener 64-50 to Augustana College.

Augustana (9-4, 2-0 CCIW) scored the first four points of the game and never trailed for the remainder of the contest. The Bluejays pulled to within a point with six minutes left to play in the opening half, but Augustana closed the half on a 13-4 run to take a 28-18 lead at halftime.

Elmhurst closed to an eight-point deficit early in the second half, but the Vikings responded with a 15-5 run to open up an 18-point advantage (47-29) with 9:40 left on the clock. Elmhurst chipped the lead down to 11 points, but came no closer as the Vikings cruised to the 14-point victory.

Elmhurst struggled with its shooting the entire game, hitting just 37.7 percent (20-of-53) of its shots from the floor. The Bluejays were ice cold from downtown, hitting just 1-of-11 (9.1 percent) 3-point attempts. 

Augustana shot 47.9 percent (23-of-48) from the floor, including 30.8 percent (4-of-13) from long distance. The Vikings also enjoyed a 38-25 advantage on the glass. 

Dustin Bainter led Elmhurst in the loss with 11 points. Zack Boyd added 10 points while Mike Jackson came of the bench to total eight points and grab a game-high eight rebounds. 

Matt Pelton paced Augustana with a game-high 16 points while Brian DeSimone added 11 points. 

Elmhurst travels to Carthage College on Wednesday, January 13.
