WHITEWATER, Wis. - The Elmhurst College wrestling team, ranked eighth in the latest NWCA poll, posted an 0-2-1 record while competing at the Border Brawl Duals at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
The Bluejays began the day by tying 17th-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater 19-19. The two teams split the 10 matches, with each squad scoring five victories.
Tom Laskowske pinned Whitewater's Matthew Oliva in 3:40 at 125 pounds.
Charlie Curran earned a 10-2 major decision over Adam Sptachek at 149 pounds.
Frank Savegnago added a 14-8 victory at 174 pounds. The Bluejays closed the dual with a pair of victories to earn the tie.
Joe Rau defeated Adam Latells 7-5 at 197 pounds.
Mark Corsello followed with a 7-2 victory over the Warhawks' Jon Schmidt at 285 pounds.
In the second round of the duels, the Bluejays fell to 20th-ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point 18-16. Both teams earned five victories, but Stevens Point captured two extra points from a pin to earn the dual victory. The Bluejays started the dual by winning the first four matches. Laskowske scored a 4-3 victory over Jordan Proier at 125 pounds.
Ben Salabura added a 9-2 decision over Jordan Kust at 133 points.
Ryan Earley followed with a 10-5 win over Shane Sweeny at 141 pounds. Curran gave Elmhurst a 13-0 lead at 149 pounds by defeating Kris McGruder 15-6. UW-Stevens Point followed by winning the next five matches to take a 18-13 lead. Corsello closed out the dual with a 7-1 win over Bret Oswald.
Elmhurst closed the day with a 25-16 loss to Trine University. After Laskowske received a forfeit at 125 pounds, Curran and Corsello logged the only other victories for the Bluejays. Curran toppled Elias Larson 5-2 at 149 pounds. Corsello blanked Dylan Forbes 12-0 at 285 pounds.
