ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College men's basketball team dropped to 5-10 overall and remained winless in CCIW play (0-4) after falling to Illinois Wesleyan University 77-67.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair, as the lead changed hands six times. With the score tied at 23, Illinois Wesleyan (13-2, 4-0 CCIW) used a 7-0 run to take a 30-23 advantage. The Bluejays chipped the lead down to two points, but back-to-back buckets by the Titans gave IWU a 34-28 halftime lead.
Illinois Wesleyan opened the second half on an 20-6 run to take a 54-34 lead with 14:30 left to play. The Bluejays managed to trim the lead down to seven points with 4:30 left but could come no closer.
Elmhurst shot 44.1 percent (26-of-59) from the floor, including 21.4 percent (3-of-14) from downtown. Illinois Wesleyan finished the contest shooting 52.0 percent (26-of-50) from the field, including 42.1 percent (8-of-19) from 3-point range.
Zack Boyd led Elmhurst in the loss with 19 points while shooting 8-of-14 from the floor.
Mike McCurdy came off the bench to score 16 for the Bluejays.
Dustin Bainter added 12 points and six rebounds while
Mike Jackson totaled 10 points and six boards.
Sean Johnson led the Titans in the victory with a game-high 21 points. Johnson was 7-of-12 from the floor, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range. Travis Rosenkranz added 15 points while Doug Sexauer scored 14. Edmond O'Callaghan totaled nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Elmhurst travels to North Park University on Wednesday, January 20.
