KENOSHA, Wis. - The Elmhurst College men's basketball team dropped to 0-3 in CCIW play after falling 79-52 to Carthage College.
Carthage (10-4, 2-1 CCIW) blew the game open early in the second half. After Elmhurst trimmed a 14-point halftime lead down to just five in the opening minutes of the second half Carthage responded by outscoring Elmhurst 32-10 over the game's final 14:30.
The Red Men raced out to a commanding 39-25 halftime lead while shooting 50.0 percent (7-of-14) from downtown in the opening 20 minutes. Elmhurst opened the second half on a 14-4 run, before Carthage put the game out of reach.
Carthage (10-4, 2-1 CCIW) thrived from beyond the arc, as the Red Men rained down 12 3-pointers in the contest. Over half of Carthage's shots came from long distance, as the Red Men attempted 27 3-point attempts in 48 total shots. The Red Men finished the game shooting 58.3 percent (28-of-48) from the floor, including 44.4 percent (12-of-27) from downtown.
Elmhurst's shooting struggles continued, as the Bluejays shot just 31.3 percent (21-of-67) from the floor. The Bluejays remained ice cold from 3-point range, hitting just 2-of-18 long range attempts (11.1 percent).
Elmhurst had a 40-31 edge on the glass, including a 24-8 advantage on the offensive boards. While Elmhurst scored 19 points on 24 offensive boards, Carthage made the most of their eight offensive rebounds, scoring 17 second-chance points.
Raul Guzman scored a career-high 28 points and totaled 11 rebounds to lead Carthage in the victory. Guzman hit 8-of-12 3-point attempts while adding four assists. Tyler Pierce added 18 points while Mitch Thompson scored 10 and blocked seven shots. Steve Djurickovic added eight points and 13 assists.
Zack Boyd led Elmhurst in the loss with 14 points.
Dustin Bainter added eight points while
Chris Childs,
Aaron Schroeder, and
Mike Jackson scored six points apiece.
