ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College baseball team closed out the 2009 season with a 10-5 loss to Carthage College.
Elmhurst wrapped up the season with a 13-23 overall record and a 4-15 mark in CCIW play.
Carthage (29-5, 18-1 CCIW) jumped out to 1-0 lead in the second on a Josh Albers RBI double. Elmhurst evened the score in the bottom of the third on a Zach Hofer solo home run.
Carthage broke the game open by scoring four runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 9-1 advantage.
Elmhurst cut into Carthage's lead in the fifth inning after Hofer drove in Brett Lilley on a sacrifice fly. The Bluejays pulled to within four runs of Carthage after scoring three times in the seventh inning. Lilley led off the frame with a solo homer to start the scoring. An error on Carthage allowed the Bluejays to score a pair of unearned runs. Dan Matkovic drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and Tyler Manske singled home the Bluejays' final run of the frame.
Carthage tacked on an insurance run in the eighth inning to score the 10-5 victory.
Lilley, Hofer, and Manske banged out two hits apiece in the loss.
Mark Sobol and Will Hodges each homered and drove in two runs for Carthage.
Joe Luft (3-4) took the loss in relief for the Bluejays. He was tagged for five hits and eight runs in 1.2 innings of work. He walked four and struck out two.
Trace Ruffie (4-1) scored the win for Carthage. Ruffie scattered seven hits and two runs in five innings of work. He struck out six while not allowing a walk.
