WAUKESHA, Wis. - Carroll University rallied for six runs in the final two innings to knock off the Elmhurst College baseball team 8-7.
Elmhurst (12-19) built a 7-2 lead after seven and a half innings, but Carroll (8-17) scored four runs in the eighth to pull to within a run. The Bluejays retired the first two Carroll batters in the bottom of the ninth, but a two-out single followed by a Chris Elliott walk-off home run allowed Carroll to escape with the victory.
The Bluejays started the scoring in the first inning as Elmhurst took advantage of a pair of Carroll errors to push across three unearned runs. Carroll scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to pull to within a run.
The score remained unchanged until the sixth inning. Joey Natale singled home a run to start Elmhurst's scoring. Brett Lilley followed with a run-scoring double to give Elmhurst a 5-2 lead. The Bluejays tacked on one more run to build a 6-2 advantage.
Elmhurst added a run in the top of the eighth on a Nick Herrera RBI double.
Herrera finished with three hits for the Bluejays in the loss. Natale, Patrick O'Connor, and Dan Bosco all recorded two hits apiece.
Matt McHugh made the start for Elmhurst and took a no decision despite pitching well. He worked six innings and allowed just five hits and two runs. He walked one and fanned two. Cyrus Rogers (2-1) took the loss for the Bluejays in relief as he surrendered Elliott's homer in the ninth.
The Bluejays resume CCIW play on Saturday, April 25, by hosting Millikin University in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
