Bluejay Baseball Team Falls to Wheaton 7-6

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - The Elmhurst College baseball team's late rally fell a run short as the Bluejays were defeated by Wheaton College 7-6 at Alexian Field in Schaumburg.

Elmhurst (11-16, 3-10 CCIW) trailed 7-1 but scored a run in the sixth and four runs in the seventh to pull to within a run. The Bluejays managed to get the leadoff runner on in the ninth inning, but Wheaton (15-15, 7-6 CCIW) used a double play to end the Elmhurst threat.

Trailing 7-1 in the sixth inning, Elmhurst scored a run on Vince Mathe's RBI single. The Bluejays struck for four runs in the seventh. Zach Hofer started the scoring with an RBI single. After back-to-back walks loaded the bases, Patrick O'Connor singled to drive in a pair of runs. Mathe followed with his second run-scoring single of the game to pull Elmhurst to within a run, but a strikeout ended the Bluejays' rally.

Hofer, O'Connor, and Mathe all recorded two hits apiece in the loss. O'Connor and Mathe each drove in two runs.

Andrew Auriemme (1-3) took the loss for the Bluejays. Auriemme made the start and allowed three hits and six runs (five earned) in 2.2 innings of work. He walked eight and struck out one. Joe Luft finished up in relief, pitching 5.1 innings and holding the Thunder to only two hits and one run. He walked one and fanned five

Elmhurst hosts Wheaton in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 18, at 2:00 p.m.
