RIVER FOREST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College baseball team slipped to 11-14 overall following a 5-4 loss at Concordia University-Chicago.
Trailing by three runs in the top of the ninth, the Bluejays mounted a rally that fell just short. Patrick O'Connor led off the frame with a double. After a strikeout, Ryan Schrader drew a walk. Vince Mathe followed with an RBI single to drive in O'Connor. Brett Lilley then singled to left to load the bases with only one out. Mike Kerr hit a sacrifice fly to left to drive in Schrader and pull Elmhurst to within a run. A walk to Zach Hofer loaded the bases and moved the tying run to third, but Nick Herrera lined out to center to end the game.
Elmhurst scored a run in the first when O'Connor drew a bases loaded walk to force in a run.
Concordia scored a run in the second and a run in the third to take a 2-1 lead. The Bluejays evened the score at 2-2 with a run in the top of the fifth, but Concordia plated a run in the bottom of the inning to reclaim a one-run lead
The Cougars added two runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 5-2 lead into the ninth.
Mathe led the Bluejays with three hits in the loss. He also scored a run and drove home a run. Lilley, Hofer, and O'Connor all recorded two hits in the Bluejays' loss.
Michael Boemo (2-3) took the loss for the Bluejays. He allowed three runs and three hits in 4.2 innings of work. He walked five and struck out one in the loss.
Elmhurst plays at Aurora University on Thursday, April 16.
