Elmhurst Baseball Team Splits Twin Bill With NCC

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College baseball team moved to 11-12 overall and 3-8 in CCIW play after splitting a doubleheader with North Central College. The Bluejays dropped game one 4-2, but won the night cap 9-8 in 11 innings.

NORTH CENTRAL 4, ELMHURST 2 (Game One) - North Central's Mike Kloss shut down the Elmhurst bats in game one, limiting the Bluejays to only three hits and two runs while tossing a complete game.

North Central (4-14, 3-7 CCIW) broke a 2-2 in the seventh inning when an Elmhurst error allowed a run to score. North Central added an insurance run in the eighth to take 4-2 advantage and held on for the victory.  

Elmhurst scored a run in the first on a Zach Hofer RBI double. The Bluejays added a run in the third when Brett Lilley scored on a wild pitch.

After allowing two runs in the first three innings, Kloss dominated the rest of the contest, allowing only one hit the final six innings. He finished the game with four walks and 17 strikeouts.

Michael Boemo (1-2) took the loss in relief. He allowed four hits and two runs in three innings of work. Andrew Auriemme made the start and pitched six innings, scattering six hits and two runs. He struck out batter in the no-decision.

ELMHURST 9, NORTH CENTRAL 8 (Game Two) - Elmhurst rallied from a three-run deficit to score a 9-8 victory in 11 innings.

Dan Bosco was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the 11th inning to force in the winning run.

Elmhurst needed a three-run rally in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings. After a lead off walk to Mike Kerr, Hofer followed with a single. Nick Herrera then singled to right to drive in Kerr. An error on the play allowed both runners to move up to second and third. Dan Matkovic singled to center to drive in pinch-runner Vince Mathe and pull Elmhurst to within a run. Herrera scored on a double-play to knot the score at 8-8.

Elmhurst grabbed a quick 2-0 lead in the game on a two-run double from Matkovic, but North Central scored four runs in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. Elmhurst reclaimed the lead in the fifth by scoring three times.

The Cardinals recaptured the lead with three runs in the seventh. North Central added a run in the ninth to set up the Bluejays' rally in the bottom of the ninth.

Herrera had a monster day at the plate, finishing 4-of-6 with a triple. He scored three runs and drove in two. Matkovic finished with a pair of hits and drove in four in the victory. Andy Bejlovec also recorded four hits in the win.

After taking the loss in game one, Boemo earned the victory in game two. He pitched one inning and allowed only a walk. Cody Boals made the start and allowed seven hits and seven runs in 6.1 innings of work. He walked two and fanned five.

Elmhurst trailed 8-5 in he bottom of the ninth, but rallied for three runs to force extra innings.
