Bluejay Baseball Team Drops CCIW Opener

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College baseball team dropped its CCIW opener, falling to Illinois Wesleyan University 4-2.

The scheduled doubleheader was, shortened to just one game due to rain. Rain has also forced the postponement of Sunday's scheduled contest in Bloomington. The games will be made up as part of a doubleheader at Illinois Wesleyan on Monday, March 30, at 3:00 p.m.

Illinois Wesleyan (9-5, 1-0 CCIW) jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first inning. The Bluejays cut the lead in half in the fourth inning. Zach Hofer led off the inning with a double and scored when Mike Kerr doubled.

The Titans added a run in the seventh on a Casey McIntosh RBI single. Elmhurst (8-4, 0-1 CCIW) had a scoring chance in the bottom of the seventh with runners at second and third with only out, but the Bluejays could not drive home the runs.

Illinois Wesleyan added a run in the eighth to take a 4-1 lead. Elmhurst pulled to within two runs in the bottom of the frame on back-to-back doubles from Brett Lilley and Hofer.

Illinois Wesleyan's Joe Froelich earned the win, scattering seven hits and and one run over seven innings of work. He fanned eight batters in the win. Alex Tosi tossed two innings of relief to earn the save.

Andrew Auriemme (1-1) took the loss for Elmhurst. He allowed just three hits and two earned runs in 6.1 innings of work. He walked seven while striking out four.

Lilley and Ker led Elmhurst's offense with three hits apiece.
