LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Elmhurst College wrestling team moved to 6-2 in dual meet competition after posting a 2-2 record against some of the nation's top teams at the Desert Duals in Las Vegas.

The Bluejays split four dual meets at the tournament. The Bluejays toppled sixth-ranked Concordia College (Minn.) and defeated Pacific University. Elmhurst suffered losses to third-ranked Coe College and fifth-ranked Wartburg College.

The Bluejays began the day with a 30-9 loss to fifth-ranked Wartburg. Joe Rau and Mark Corsello scored the Bluejays' lone points of the dual. Rau pinned Alex Schwerdferger in 4:56 at 197 pounds. Second-ranked Corsello remained undefeated at 285 pounds by defeating third-ranked John Helgerson 4-2. Wartburg won a pair of contests that featured nationally ranked grapplers. Mark Kist toppled the Bluejays' Jake Oster 6-4 at 125 pounds while T.J. Moen downed Elmhurst's Charlie Curran 5-2 at 149 pounds.

The Bluejays blanked Pacific University 44-0 in the next dual. Elmhurst swept all 10 matches. Jack Lewis, Mike McNeil, Joe Rau, and Brian Brooks all won their matches by pinfall. Brooks made short work of Chris McLinden, pinning the Pacific wrestler in just 51 seconds.

Elmhurst scored its second win of the tournament by upsetting sixth-ranked Concordia College (Minn.) 19-16. Oster started the dual by pinning Josh Kelly in 2:43. Jake Denhof followed with a 9-6 victory over Mike Holman at 133 pounds to give Elmhurst a 9-0 lead. Concordia scored wins at 141 and 149 pounds to cut Elmhurst's lead to just three points. Dan Hamilton followed with a 12-2 major decision over Kevin Fynboh at 157 pounds to give Elmhurst a 13-6 lead. Concordia won the next three matches to take an 18-13 advantage. Rau defeated Nate Schwitz 3-2 to bring the Bluejays to within two points. Corsello earned the dual victory for the Bluejays by defeating Tom Bouressa 8-6.

The Bluejays finished the tournament with a 34-9 loss to third-ranked Coe College. Denhof, Ryan Earley, and Curran all scored victories for the Bluejays.
