ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College volleyball team swept Wheaton College 25-20, 25-20, 25-15 in a play-in match for the CCIW Tournament. The Bluejays moved to 17-16 overall and qualified for this weekend's CCIW Tournament with the victory.
Wheaton (17-16) jumped out to a quick five-point lead in the first set before the Bluejays began chipping away. Elmhurst evened the set and pulled away with a 25-20 victory. The Bluejays built a seven-point advantage in the second set and never allowed the Thunder to get closer than three points while scoring the 25-20 win. The Bluejays left no doubt in the third set, opening up a commanding 19-7 lead and finishing the sweep with a 25-15 win.
Caitlin O'Hara and Paige Fombelle led the Bluejays in the victory. O'Hara totaled a team-leading 13 kills and hit .440 while Fombelle recorded 11 kills and hit .500. Antonéya Veasy Smith added seven kills in the victory. Katie Buechel finished with a team-leading 18 digs while Lindy Melville led the squad in assists with 20. Erin Thill chipped in with 15 assists.
With the win, the Bluejays qualified for this weekend's CCIW Tournament in Kenosha, Wis. Elmhurst, the fourth-seed, will face the tournament's top-seed Carthage College in a semifinal match on Friday (November 6), at 7:00 p.m.
Sixth-seeded Millikin University will face #2 seed North Central College in the other semifinal match at 4:30 p.m. The winner of the tournament receives, the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
