Bluejay Football Team Downs Chicago 27-6

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College football team ran its record to 3-0 by defeating the University of Chicago 27-6.

Elmhurst outgained Chicago by over 160 yards and led 27-0 before Chicago (0-3) finally cracked the scoreboard midway through the fourth quarter.

The Bluejays jumped on the scoreboard immediately. Eric Puzon (Wheaton/Wheaton Warrenville South) stripped Chicago's Clay Wolff on the opening kickoff and recovered the ball at the Maroon's 30-yard line.  Elmhurst settled for a 20-yard Tyler Lomnicki (Elmhurst/York) field goal to take a 3-0 lead.

After a quick three-and-out by Chicago, the Bluejays took over at their own 49-yard line and promptly marched to the end zone in just five plays. Chris Kudyba (Des Plaines/Elk Grove) capped the drive by hitting Matt D'Angelo (McHenry/East) for a 13-yard touchdown pass.

Chicago appeared to gain some momentum on its next offensive possession, driving down to the Elmhurst 5-yard line, but a fumble by Francis Adarkwa was recovered by the Bluejays.

Elmhurst added to its lead midway through the second quarter. After a Dane Paul (Tolono/Unity) interception gave the Bluejays the ball at the Maroons' 20-yard line, Elmhurst needed just six plays to find the end zone. Kudyba capped the drive with a one-yard touchdown run. 

The Bluejays grabbed a 20-0 lead before the half when Lomnicki booted a 25-yard field goal with 34 seconds to play in the half.

Elmhurst took the opening kickoff of the third quarter and drove 82 yards in seven plays to take a 27-0 lead. Griffin Gibson (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore) found the end zone on a seven-yard run to account for the Bluejays' final touchdown of the game.

An Elmhurst fumble early in the fourth quarter set up Chicago's only score of the game. The Maroons drove 45 yards and scored when John Kiernan found Wolff for a 13-yard touchdown pass.

Elmhurst outgained Chicago 344-182. The Bluejays totaled 121 yards on the ground and 223 through the air. Chicago finished with -10 yards on the ground and 192 passing yards.

Gibson and Jarred Sherrod (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) combined to carry the ball 20 times and total 110 yards. Gibson carried nine times for 65 yards and a touchdown, while Sherrod rushed 11 times for 45 yards. Kudyba finished 19-of-33 for 223 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for a one-yard score. D'Angelo was the Bluejays' top receiver, catching six passes for 83 yards and a touchdown.

Joe Steelman led the Maroons on the ground, carrying 10 times for 18 yards. Kiernan finished 18-of-35 for 192 yards. He totaled one touchdown and one interception. Wolff was Chicago's top receiver, hauling in six passes for 68 yards and a touchdown.

Tyler Olson (Durand/H.S.) and Jon Janus (Lake Zurich/H.S.) both finished with seven tackles apiece to pace the Bluejays. Elmhurst combined to sack Kiernan five times in the contest, including two by Mark Blumstein (Homewood/Homewood-Flossmoor).

Todd Young paced Chicago with nine tackles, while Corey White and Cameron Grimes each recorded eight stops apiece.

Elmhurst begins CCIW play next Saturday (October 4) by hosting Augustana College at 1:00 p.m.
