LAS VEGAS, Nev. (December 21, 2008) - The Elmhurst College wrestling team, ranked 16th in the latest NWCA poll, posted a 3-1 dual meet record at the Desert Duals in Las Vegas.
Elmhurst (7-1) scored wins over 14th-ranked Cortland State University of New York, 20th-ranked Johnson & Wales University, and Pacific University. The Bluejays' only loss came at the hands of second-ranked Coe College.
The Bluejays began the tournament with a 33-9 win over Cortland State. The Bluejays won seven of the 10 matches to cruise to the victory. Jake Oster (125 pounds), Tony Doan (157 pounds), and Frank Savegnago all won their matches by pinfall.
The Bluejays' only loss was a 28-14 loss to Coe College. Oster, Rob Lejman (141 pounds), and Greg Horn (165 pounds) scored wins for Elmhurst. Oster, currently ranked third at 125 pounds, pinned second-ranked Clayton Rush in 1:33.
Elmhurst scored a 44-3 win over Pacific in the Bluejays' third dual of the day. Elmhurst scored three wins by forfeit and lost only one match in the entire dual.
The Bluejays closed out the tournament with a 29-21 win over 20th-ranked Johnson & Wales. Oster ran his record to 10-0 on the season and won his ninth straigh match by pinfall by pinning James Sporano in 5:17. Horn finsihed up the tournament with a perfect 4-0 record by scoring a 15-7 major decision over Spencer Engelken at 165 pounds. Lejman also finished the tournament with a 4-0 mark by scoring an 8-2 victory over John Donaleski at 149 pounds.
