NCAA HISTORY

TEAM NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

1983 NCAA Diision III Women's Volleyball Championship Team

The 1983 Elmhurst women’s volleyball team made history as the University's first-ever national championship team, capturing the NCAA Division III title under head coach Bill Walton and assistant Karen Hill. The squad was led by a talented and determined group of student-athletes, including Sue Matejka Blythel, Dawn McKeever Boyer, Sherry Bradbury, Cathy Dulkowski, Sheri England, Terry Fults Espinoza, Karen Olmstead Grudzinski, Sue Gutierrez, Sue Birdsey Hempe, Kim Dettloff Lichtenberger, Kim Schroeder Mullaney, Karen Sauer, and Maureen Higgins Toby.

1985 NCAA Diision III Women's Volleyball Championship Team

Following a rebuilding season in 1984, the 1985 Elmhurst women’s volleyball team stormed back to capture the program’s second NCAA Division III National Championship in three years. Led by head coach Bill Walton, the Bluejays overcame an early 10-5 start—partly due to the absence of standout sophomore Therese Dorigan—to win 30 of their final 34 matches, including 17 straight to close the season. The roster featured a mix of experienced seniors and rising underclassmen, including key contributors Shelli Swaim, Carmi Frankovich, Michelle Greaves Rathbun, and Dorigan. All-tournament selections included senior Sue Birdsey Hempe, sophomore Melanie Hollander Moore, Swaim, and Dorigan. The Bluejays showcased national-caliber talent, with Dorigan, Swaim, Moore, and Laurie Austin Flanagan all finishing among the tournament’s top 10 hitters. Rounding out the championship team were seniors Sherry Bradbury Martin and Swaim; sophomores Lori Farrey Kulczycki, Natalie Ganser Holder, Steph Miszewski, Diane Price, and Nancy Tuhy; and freshman Sandy Harris.
