KENOSHA, Wis. (Nov. 1, 2025) — In cold, rainy conditions on the shores of Lake Michigan, the Elmhurst University women's soccer team made history — earning the program's first-ever postseason victory with a dramatic penalty-kick triumph over Carthage College in the CCIW Tournament Quarterfinals.
After 110 minutes of heart-stopping soccer ended in a 1–1 draw, Elmhurst held its nerve in penalties, outlasting the Firebirds to advance to Wednesday's CCIW Semifinals at North Park University.
A Battle from the Start
Carthage struck first in the 21st minute, but the Bluejays answered just three minutes later when
Maddie Cummings buried her seventh goal of the season, finishing a composed strike from inside the box to level the match.
From there, Elmhurst battled relentlessly in the slick, rain-soaked conditions. The Bluejays outshot the Firebirds 13–9, showing composure and toughness as both teams pressed for a late winner.
Defensive Grit and Poise
Elmhurst goalkeeper
Erin Fitzharris anchored the defense turning away multiple Carthage surges down the stretch. The Bluejays' back line stood tall through two overtimes, forcing the game into penalties.
History Made
In the shootout, Elmhurst showed composure beyond measure including a great performance by sophomore
Sequoia Ross at goalie, converting clutch kicks combined with dramatic saves to seal a historic postseason win — the first in the program's history. Players rushed the field as the Bluejays celebrated a defining moment for Elmhurst women's soccer.
Looking Ahead
With the victory, Elmhurst (12–5–3) advances to the CCIW Semifinals to face North Park University on Wednesday in Chicago as they continue their quest for a CCIW Championship.
