ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Elmhurst University women's wrestling team competed in their first-ever dual meet in the program's history Wednesday (Nov. 20) evening, falling to Augustana College by a score of 40-10.
Elmhurst fell to 0-1 with the loss, and the same record in CCIW action, while Augustana moves to 1-1 with the same record in conference.Â
Elmhurst had strong performances early in the night, particularly from Veronica Cosio, who secured the Bluejays' only match win that was contested. However, Augie's depth and a string of forfeits gave the Vikings a significant edge, and ultimately helped the Vikings to victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The meet began with Eva Castrejon picking up five team points as Augie forfeited the opening bout, putting the Jays ahead 5-0. Veronica Cosio dominated in her match, as she pinned Augie's Jo Orozco just 1:46 into the match. Cosio's victory extended Elmhurst's lead to 10-0, giving the visitors early momentum.
From there, a string of forefits and falls secured the home team's victory.
UP NEXT
The Bluejays return to the mat on Tuesday, December 3, on the road for a tri-meet with CCIW foe Aurora and Quincy University. The Jays take on Aurora at 5:00 pm, and will take on the Hawks at 6pm.
