ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Elmhurst University women's basketball team came up just one point short in overtime, falling 54-53, at Rockford University.
Elmhurst (3-20) led 14-12 at the end of the first quarter after a back and forth battle. The Bluejays were able to extend their lead to three by halftime to head into the locker room up 24-21.
Elmhurst held its largest lead of the game (10 points) with 8:54 left to play in regulation.
Rockford (13-9) chipped away and was able to tie the game up at 45 apiece with 5:12 left on the clock.
The Regents had a three-point lead with 57 seconds left, but Elmhurst's
Taylor Harazin made a key layup and free throw to send the game to overtime.
Rockford took a two-point lead early in overtime before
Kate Matthews connected from behind the arc to put the Bluejays up 51-50 with 3:53 left.
A few Elmhurst fouls sent Rockford to the line where they went 4-of-4 and took a 51-54 lead.
Marissa Urso made two free throws with 45 seconds left to make it a one-point game, but it wasn't enough to walk away with a win.
Harazin led the way for the Bluejays with 15 points and a game-high 18 rebounds.
Kate Matthews added in 15 points of her own along with five boards, while
Marissa Mussatto chipped in 11 points and four rebounds in the loss.
The Regents were led by Audrina Terhune with 14 points and five rebounds. Anaya Davis finished one rebound shy of a double-double with nine points and 10 boards. Roshanda Stevens chipped in six points and eight rebounds for her team, while Da Sani Hannah contributed six points and nine boards in the win.
Elmhurst outshot Rockford 28.3 percent (17-of-60) to 27.5 percent (19-of-69) from the field. The Regents faired better from behind the arc shooting 17.6 percent (3-of-17) to the Bluejays 8.3 percent (2-of-24).
Elmhurst returns to CCIW play for its next contest on Wednesday, February 16 at Millikin University.
