Bluejays Setback by Wheaton

WHEATON, Ill. – The Elmhurst University women's basketball team came up short on the road against Wheaton College, falling 59-53 in a closely-contested contest.

The Bluejays trailed 12-14 at the end of the first quarter, but were able to tie the score up at 14 after two free throws by Chloe Conley with minutes left in the half.

Wheaton (13-4) extended its lead to six heading into the locker room.  The Thunder would lead by as many as 14 (38-24) with 5:20 left in the third.

Elmhurst (2-14) was able to tie the game up once more at 53 after a 13-to-4 run with just under five minutes remaining in the contest.  
The Thunder took advantage of the Bluejays' attempts to get the ball back through fouling by hitting 4-of-4 from the foul line to pull away for the six-point win.  

The Bluejays finished with three players in double-figures. Marissa Urso, Kate Matthews and Ella Riley each had 12 points and shot a combined 56.25 percent (9-of-16) from behind the arc. Matthews led her team on the boards with nine rebounds.

Wheaton also ended with three players in double-figures. Hannah Swider finished with a game-high 23 points and eight rebounds, while teammate Annika Richardson added in 13 points and six boards.  Caroline Sikkink posted the sole double-double of the contest with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Ellie Cassel also had 10 rebounds for the Thunder in the win.

Elmhurst outshot Wheaton 34 percent (17-of-50) to 28.8 percent (21-of-73) from the field. The Bluejays shot an impressive 41.7 percent (10-of-24) from behind the arc compared to the Thunder's 20 percent (4-of-20).

The Bluejays head to Naperville to take on North Central on Monday, January 24.
