ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The Elmhurst University men's tennis team's season came to a close after suffering a 5-0 loss to Augustana College in the quarterfinals of the CCIW Championship.
Augustana (9-6), seeded second overall, swept the three doubles matches before taking two singles contests to clinch the 5-0 victory.
In doubles play, Caio DeRezende and Alvaro Leal toppled Elmhurst's pair of
Justin Penados and
Ben Cavka 8-0 at No. 1. Justin Cassens and Leonardo Panosso stopped the Bluejays' No. 3 team of
Tavious Imperial and
Shawn Sabaricos 8-3. The Vikings finished the doubles sweep as Peter Alex and Kyle Boudreau toppled Elmhurst's duo of
Brandon Fulmer and
Florin Stan 8-3 at No. 2.
In singles play, DeRezende stopped Penados 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 while Ryan Sullivan defeated Imperial 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6.
The remaining four singles matches went unfinished as Augustana had secured the five team points to advance in the championships.
Elmhurst will host the CCIW Championship semifinals and finals on Friday, May 7 and Saturday, May 8.
