WHEATON, Ill. - The Elmhurst softball team closed out its final CCIW games of the season by dropping both ends of a doubleheader at Wheaton College. Wheaton took game one 2-1 and game two 8-5.
WHEATON 2, ELMHURST 1 (Game One) - Wheaton scored two runs in the second and made them stand up, holding off Elmhurst for a 2-1 win in game one.
Janette Oh doubled in both of Wheaton's runs in the bottom of the second to stake the Thunder to a quick 2-0 lead.
Elmhurst cut the lead in half in the sixth inning on
Alyssa Ressinger's RBI single. The Bluejays had chances to score in multiple innings, but Elmhurst finished just 1-for-10 at the plate with runners in scoring position.
Veronica Zahn collected two of Elmhurst's six hits in the loss.
Kelly Thornton went the distance and earned the win for Wheaton. Thornton worked seven innings and allowed just six hits and one run while striking out five.
Sydni Gizynski took the loss for Elmhurst, tossing six innings and allowing four hits and two runs (one earned). She walked two and struck out three.
WHEATON 8, ELMHURST 5 (Game Two) - Wheaton scored four runs in the first and never looked back, finishing the sweep with an 8-5 in game two.
The Thunder sent eight batters to the plate in the first inning and used four singles and a pair of wild pitches to plate four runs. Elmhurst cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first, scoring on a
Val Perrelli RBI double and a
Mia Riese sacrifice fly.
The Thunder tacked on a run in the second to extend their lead to 5-2. Elmhurst cut the lead back to two after Riese Drove in a run in the third. Elmhurst loaded the bases with no outs but managed just one run on a Wheaton error. The Bluejays hit into a pair of fielder's choices with the lead runner being forced out at the plate.
Wheaton tacked on a run in the fifth and two more in the seventh to extend their lead to 8-3.
Alexis Ramos doubled home a pair of runs for Elmhurst in the seventh to make the final score 8-5.
Perrelli finished with three hits to lead the Bluejays' offense.
Emily Despain took the loss for Elmhurst, allowing seven hits and five runs over two innings of work. Ashley Carter earned the win in relief for the Thunder while Thornton notched a save.
Elmhurst (8-23, 2-14 CCIW) plays at Kalamazoo College on Sunday, April 28.
