Bluejays Fall to Sixth-Ranked Titans

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Elmhurst softball team dropped a pair of CCIW contests to sixth-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University. The Bluejays fell 9-0 in game one before dropping game two 6-4.
 
Elmhurst slipped to 7-20 overall and 1-11 in the CCIW while Illinois Wesleyan improved to 25-6 overall and 10-0 in league play.
 
ILLINOIS WESLEYAN 9, ELMHURST 0 (Game One) – Elmhurst was limited to just two hits by Illinois Wesleyan's Ally Wiegand as the Titans pulled away for a 9-0 win in game one.
 
Illinois Wesleyan scored twice in the first inning, tacked on three runs in the second and scored four more in the third to come away with the 9-0 win.
 
Alexis Ramos and Mia Riese collected one hit apiece for the Bluejays. Colleen Palczynski and Brittany Murphy finished with two hits apiece for the Titans. Elmhurst committed four errors in the loss leading to two unearned runs for the Titans.
 
Emily Despain made the start and took the loss for Elmhurst, allowing five hits and seven earned runs over three innings. Wiegand paced the Titans from the circle, finishing with just two hits allowed over five innings. She fanned eight while not issuing a walk.
 
ILLINOIS WESLEYAN 6, ELMHURST 4 (Game Two) – The Titans scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to take game two by a 6-4 final score.
 
The Titans took advantage of three Elmhurst errors in the first inning to score four runs and jump out to an early lead. Elmhurst cut the lead in half with two runs in the bottom of the first. Rebekah Ondracek singled home a run and Ramos came around to score on a Titans' error to make the score 4-2.
 
The Bluejays cashed in on an IWU error in the fourth to score a pair of runs. Julianna Bauer singled home a run and Mia Tran added a two-out RBI single to tie the score at 4-4.
 
Palczynski homered with one out in the seventh to put the Titans back in front at 5-4. A passed ball allowed the Titans to tack on an insurance run and earn the 6-4 win.
 
Sydni Gizynski took the loss in relief for Elmhurst despite pitching well. Gizynski worked six innings, allowing only four hits and two earned runs. She walked two and struck out two. Wiegand picked up the win for the Titans in relief, tossing the final two innings and allowing just one hit while striking out one.
 
Elmhurst plays at North Park University on Monday, April 22.
