CHICAGO, Ill. - The Elmhurst women's basketball moved into a three-way tie for fifth-place in the CCIW standings after suffering a 62-58 loss at North Park University.
Elmhurst fell to 9-15 overall and 5-10 in league play with the loss. Elmhurst, North Park (9-15, 5-10 CCIW) and North Park all have identical 5-10 league records.
The back-and-forth game featured 11 ties and 10 lead changes. Elmhurst built a 15-13 lead after the first quarter, but North Park carried a 24-23 lead into the locker room at half time.
With the game tied at 38-38 with two minutes remaining in the third quarter, Elmhurst rattled off five straight points behind a bucket from
Elena Cabrera and a three-pointer from
Kelly Weyhrich. The Bluejays led by five early in the fourth quarter when North Park rattled off an 11-1 run to open up a 51-46 lead with six minutes left. Elmhurst closed to within two points with 1:12 remaining, but North Park tacked on layup to extend their lead to four. A bucket by Weyhrich brought Elmhurst back to within two with 37 seconds left, but North Park was able to get a key offensive rebound after a missed free throw. The Vikings hit two free throws to seal the victory in the final seconds.
Elmhurst shot 33.9 percent (21-of-62) from the floor in the loss, including 42.9 percent (6-of-14) from three-point range. The Bluejays struggled from the foul line, hitting 52.6 percent (10-of-19) of its shots.
Weyhrich led Elmhurst in the loss, dropping in a season-high 17 points while shooting 7-of-10 from the floor.
Lisa Logan added nine points while
Marissa Urso scored seven for the Bluejays.
North Park shot 33.9 percent (20-of-59) from the field. Jayla Johnson led the Vikings with 16 points while Sinead Molloy and Lauryn Alba-Garner scored 10 points apiece. Josie Summerville pulled down a team-high 20 rebounds.
Elmhurst closes out the regular season by hosting North Central College on Saturday, February 16.
