Women's Hoops Downed by #24 Wheaton

WHEATON, Ill. – The Elmhurst women's basketball team slid to 3-4 in the CCIW after suffering a 70-65 loss at 24th-ranked Wheaton College.
 
Elmhurst (7-9) came out strong in the opening quarter, racing out a 19-10 lead over the first five minutes of action. Wheaton (13-3, 7-0 CCIW) answered back with an 11-0 run to close the quarter, taking a 21-19 lead into the second. The Thunder led by three with three minutes left in the half and closed the half on a 9-4 run to take a 35-27 lead into the locker room at halftime. Both steams struggled with their shooting in the second quarter. Elmhurst hit just 2-of-12 shots (16.7 percent) in the quarter while Wheaton connected on only 3-of-14 attempts (21.4 percent).
 
Wheaton extended its lead to 17 points late in the third quarter, but Elmhurst came up with a strong finish, outscoring the Thunder 14-4 over the final 3:30 to pull to within seven points after three quarters. Wheaton scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to push their lead back to 12 points. Elmhurst managed to trim the deficit down to eight points with 6:30 remaining, but the Bluejays came no closer as Wheaton pulled away for the 15-point win.
 
Elmhurst finished the game shooting 31.3 percent (21-of-67) from the field and was ice cold from three-point range, connecting on only 2-of-19 attempts (10.5 percent). Courtney O'Donnell led Elmhurst in the loss with 16 points, shooting 6-of-9 from the floor. Lisa Logan added a double-double of 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Kween Jean came off the bench to score 10 while Kelle Clay finished with nine points. Kelly Weyhrich scored five points while dishing out a game-high seven assists.
 
Wheaton shot 39.7 percent (23-of-58) from the field in the win. Four players reached double figures in scoring for Wheaton. Hannah Williams led the way with 18 points while Jordan Myroth totaled a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds. Kristi Demski came off the bench to score 13 while Devin Kyler finished with 10 points.
 
Elmhurst travels to Millikin University on Wednesday, January 16.
