CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Elmhurst women's basketball team outscored Coe 23-12 over the final five minutes of action to rally past the Kohaws for a 73-66 road victory.
Elmhurst (5-5) jumped out to a quick start, opening up a 13-4 lead in the opening quarter. The Bluejays never trailed in the second quarter, but Coe (5-3) managed to pull even at 31-31 late in the quarter. A bucket from
Kellee Clay gave Elmhurst a 33-31 lead at the half.Â
Elmhurst extended its lead to seven points early in the third (41-34), but Coe responded by closing the quarter on a 14-4 run to carry a three-point lead into the fourth quarter. Coe pushed its led up five on two occasions in the fourth and led 54-50 with less than minutes remaining when Elmhurst mounted its rally.Â
Buckets from Clay and
Emmy Gryna pulled Elmhurst even at 54-54. After a Kyna Smith jumper gave Coe a 56-54 edge,
Kelly Weyhrich put the Bluejays in front for good by knocking down a three-pointer. Gryna followed with a trey of her own, extending the Bluejays' lead to four with 3:17 left to play. The Bluejays scored four more points to cap a 9-0 run and give the team a 64-56 lead with 1:23 left.Â
Coe scored five straight to pull to within three with under a minute to play, but the Bluejays hit three free throws to double their lead to six. Smith knocked down a three-pointer with 30 seconds left to bring Coe back to within three, but the Bluejays closed the game from the free throw line by hitting all six of their attempts down the stretch.Â
Elmhurst finished the game shooting 41.4 percent (24-of-58) from the floor, including 33.3 percent (5-of-15) from three-point distance. The Bluejays were sharp from the foul line, converting 20-of-25 attempts (80.0 percent).Â
Courtney O'Donnell led the way for Elmhurst with 14 points and four rebounds. Weyhrich added 13 points and three assists while Clay tallied 12 points and six steals or the Bluejays.
Kween Jean finished with nine points and five rebounds while
Lisa Logan totaled seven points and eight rebounds.Â
Coe hit 43.5 percent (27-of-62) of its shots, including 32.0 percent (8-of-25) from downtown. Jackie Feldt led the way for Coe with 16 points while Smith totaled 10 points. Sydney Schroder allied six points and nine assists for the Kohawks.Â
Elmhurst plays at the Loras Tournament on December 28-29.Â
