Bluejays Top Redlands in Overtime

REDLANDS, Calif. – Kellee Clay hit a game-tying jumper at the end of regulation and then delivered the game-winning bucket in overtime to lead the Elmhurst women's basketball team to a 72-71 overtime win over the University of Redlands.
 
Elmhurst (3-2) fell behind early, trailing 18-6 just seven minutes into the contest. The Bluejays were behind 18-10 after the first quarter and trailed 32-26 at the half. Redlands (2-2) extended its lead up to nine points early in the third quarter before Elmhurst mounted a rally. The Bluejays ripped off a 15-5 run over the next five minutes to take their first lead of the game at 45-44 following a Becca Gerke layup. A pair of free throws gave Redlands a 46-45 lead after three quarters.
 
Redlands pushed its lead back up to six points with just under three minutes to play, but Elmhurst slowly chipped away at the lead. Trailing by four with a minute remaining, Clay hit a layup to bring the Bluejays to within two at 67-65. Redlands had multiple chances to add to its lead, but came up empty. Redlands missed two shots on its next possession and then following an Elmhurst turnover, the Bulldogs turned the ball back over to Elmhurst. After an Elmhurst turnovers with just seconds left to play, the Bluejays were forced to foul. Redlands missed both free throws with Elmhurst collecting the rebound with three seconds left. The Bluejays called timeout to advance the ball to midcourt. After the timeout, Clay took a pass along the baseline and knocked down a 10-foot jumper as the horn sounded to send the game to overtime.
 
In overtime, the game was even at 70-70 when Clay put Elmhurst in front 72-70 with a layup with 90 seconds left to play. After both teams missed on their next possession, Redlands had the ball with a chance to tie. The Bulldogs missed a three-pointer and putback attempt, but Alyssa Lee was fouled with under a second remaining. Lee missed the first free throw and hit the second, but Elmhurst was able to inbound the ball and run out the clock to come away with the win.
 
Elmhurst shot 39.7 percent (27-of-68) from the floor in the win, including 35.7 percent (5-of-14) from three-point distance. Elmhurst outscored Redlands 40-24 in the paint and turned 20 Bulldogs' turnovers into 22 points. Clay led the way for Elmhurst, scoring a season-high 19 points and adding three assists. Gerke came off the bench to score 14 and collect seven rebounds. Lisa Logan, Kween Jean and Kelly Weyhrich added eight points apiece for the Bluejays. Logan added a team-best eight rebounds while Weyhrich finished with a team-leading five assists.
 
Redlands shot 42.9 percent (24-of-56) from the field, including 33.3 percent (4-of-12) from beyond the arc. Alyssa Downs led Redlands in the loss with a game-high 26 points. Cassandra Lacey added 23 points, nine rebounds and five assists for the Bulldogs.
 
Elmhurst hosts the University of Chicago on Saturday, December 1.
