Softball Team Opens Season With Split

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Elmhurst College softball team opened the 2017 season by splitting two contests at the NTC Spring Games in Florida. The Bluejays blanked Wisconsin-Stevens Point 3-0 before falling to Buena Vista 10-0.

ELMHURST 3, UW-STEVENS POINT 0 - Stefanie Sanidas tossed a complete game shutout while pitching Elmhurst to a 3-0 win over UW-Stevens Point in the Bluejays' season debut.

Sanidas kept the Pointers' hitters at bay for the entire game, scattering just four hits over seven innings of work. Only one runner reached second base for the Pointers as Sanidas fanned five and did not issue a walk.

Elmhurst grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third, cashing in on an error from UW-Stevens Point. The Bluejays made it 2-0 in the fourth on Tara Cannella's RBI single. An RBI single from Lauren Rismondo in the fifth accounted for the Bluejays' final run of the game.

Val Perrelli finished with two hits and two runs scored to help pace the Bluejays' offense. Getzloff also recorded a pair of hits in the Elmhurst win.

BUENA VISTA 10, ELMHURST 0 - Buena Vista shut down Elmhurst's bats in the night cap, limiting Elmhurst to just three hits. The Beavers banged out 13 hits in the win while piling up 10 runs.

Buena Vista struck for four runs in the first, two in the third, a run in the fifth and three in the sixth to score the 10-run victory.

Mikayla Melone, Sydney Ruotsi and Ellie Braun each recorded a hit for the Bluejays in the loss. Emily Despain took the loss from the circle, allowing eight hits and six runs (five earned) in three innings of work. She walked two and struck out two. Bailee Krantz finished up, going three innings and allowing five hits and four runs while striking out three.
