CLERMONT, Fla. - The Elmhurst softball team moved to 2-2 on its season-opening Florida road trip by splitting a pair of contests against Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponents. The Bluejays fell 7-0 to Wisconsin-Oshkosh to open the day but bounced back to upend Wisconsin-Platteville 9-4.Â
OSHKOSH 7, ELMHURST 0 - Oshkosh scored all seven of its runs in the fifth inning to hand the Bluejays a 7-0 defeat to open the day.Â
After four scoreless innings, Oshkosh struck first as Lauren Torborg led off the fifth with a solo homer. A pair of Elmhurst errors in the inning proved costly, as the Titans pushed home six unearned runs with Abby Menting, delivering a big blow with a three-run homer to cap the Oshkosh scoring.
Brianna Thompson led Elmhurst at the plate in the loss, finishing with three hits, half of the team's six total hits in the loss.Â
Stephanie Sturino took the loss for the Bluejays, working four innings and allowing five hits and three runs (just one earned). She walked one while striking out two. Sara Brunlieb picked up the victory for the Titans, tossing a complete-game shutout, scattering six hits and three walks over seven innings.
ELMHURST 9, PLATTEVILLE 4 - Elmhurst evened its record at 2-2 on the season with a rain-shortened 9-4 win over UW-Platteville.Â
Elmhurst jumped on the scoreboard first with three runs in the top of the third. Thompson sparked the inning with a two-out, two-run single to give the Bluejays a three-run cushion. The lead did not last long as Platteville answered back with four runs in the bottom of the third. A two-run homer from Carley Rote helped spark the innings for the Pioneers.
Elmhurst reclaimed the lead in the top of the fourth after an RBI double from
Val Perrelli and a run-scoring single from
Stefanie Sanidas.
Crystal Marinelli blew the game open for the Bluejays by crack a three-run homer to give Elmhurst an 8-4 lead.
Bekah Ondracek tacked on an insurance run in the fifth by launching a solo homer.Â
The skies opened up in the seventh inning and the game was called after the rain poured down.Â
Marinelli and Perrelli finished with two hits apiece in the victory. Marinelli drove in a team-best three runs while Thompson and Sanidas drove in two runs apiece.
Sanidas improved to 1-1 on the season by picking up the victory. She tossed six innings allowing five hits, five walks and four earned runs. She fanned five batters in the victory.Â
Elmhurst takes on the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Colby College tomorrow.
